The Mixtec are one of the many indigenous groups to inhabit Oaxaca. A version of the ball game played by their ancestors is still played in many areas today. If we'd had the chance to stop on the Oaxaca coast we had planned on taking in a game of "Pelota Mixteca."

Here is one of the Mixtec ballgame players. From what the glyphs in the codices have told its readers, the game these prehispanic Mesoamericans would play involved a rubber ball made from tree sap. The ball could be bounced anywhere on the body except the hands, where the goal of the game was to get the ball to go through a large vertically-mounted hoop in the center of a large court.

From the few ball courts I've seen it seems a little weird that some hoops are large while others are small. Hoop height can also vary from easily accessible to something only giants could manage to get a ball through. To me it seems like there's still a lot we don't know about this game. For instance, some people claim that the winners were sacrificed to the gods. I still can't see how this notion is justifiable in any sense.

This decorated figure isn't even watching the match. Two players battle it out in the background. This figure might be a god or member of royalty that the players are aiming to please.

The engraving on the radish in front of the figure reads "Pelota Mixteca". Mixteca is the adjective for the Mixtec people, who were a cultural group who were contemporaries of the Aztecs, but may have been in the area before the Aztecs migrated from the north. The Mixtecs are known for expanding the large hilltop complex of Monte Albán after conquering those who originally built it, the Zapotecs.

The Aztecs, Mayans, Mixtecs, and Zapotecs had a ballgame that brought the empire together in what might be considered a healthy release of aggression. This scene shows the game being played where the point of the game is to put a rubber ball through a vertical hoop without the use of one's hands.

Modern incarnations of this game are still played in some parts of Mexico, although if the rules are those of the original game is unknown.
