Strange that as I was wandering around the back streets of Bakersfield, Ca. and this sign popped out, the first thing that came to my mind was The Rolling Stones…
During their tour of North America in 1969, the Rolling Stones took a lot of criticism over the high costs of their ticket prices…that and the fact that they had to skip playing at Woodstock because Mick Jagger was in Australia filming a crappy movie, the band opted to end their tour with a free concert in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park…a west coast version of Woodstock…well, city officials did not chomp at the proverbial bit and in an 11th hour decision the concert was relocated to Altamont motor speedway 60 miles to the east… to keep costs down, the Stones decided to hire the Hells Angels MC as security…initially stating that they were not cops, the Angels agreed to ‘watch’ the stage in exchange for $500 worth of cold beer…($3216 at today’s prices)…well – hehehe – to make a long story longer, as the day rolled on and the violence increased, second billed band The Grateful Dead decided not to risk performing and vacated the scene leaving a major void in time between them and the Stones, who refused to take the stage until nightfall…the concert turned out to be what was described by many as THE worst day in rock & roll history with 4 deaths and many more injured…
Thus officially ending the summer of love…
